Motorhome insurance & deductibles — clear guide

Every operator offers 3-5 cover levels under different names but with the same logic: pay more daily so the deductible (liability/bond) is lower in case of an accident. Here we break down each level.

The general scheme (all operators)

Level 1

Standard / Basic

Deductible ~5,000-7,500 AUD/NZD/USD. Included in base rate. High risk if accident.

Level 2 — recommended

Liability Reduction

Deductible ~1,500-2,500. Extra ~30-50/day. Best value-for-money for most travellers.

Level 3

Premium / Maxi

Deductible $0. Extra ~50-90/day. For total peace of mind or new drivers.

Level 4

Platinum Pack

Premium + extras: 2 drivers, child seats, kits, 24h assistance. Min 10 days. For long trips.

When to upgrade

Standard might be enough if...

  • · Your credit card already covers RV rentals (verify — many exclude large RVs).
  • · You're an experienced driver with years of large-vehicle/van driving.
  • · Your travel insurance explicitly covers motorhomes (rare).

Liability Reduction almost always. Premium if...

  • · You drive 2,000+ km in fewer than 14 days.
  • · New drivers or first RV rental.
  • · Families with small children (more distractions, higher risk of small damage).
  • · You're going 4WD / outback (kangaroos, dust, low branches).
